Delta teen arrested on multiple charges after chase

MESA COUNTY, Colo –  On Friday, June 14, 2019 at approximately 9:45pm Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a grey Chevy pickup driving at high speeds on the wrong side of Highway 50 around mm 61 headed towards Grand Junction. 

Deputies caught up with the pickup truck as it was driving directly between both lanes of westbound travel.  It did not stop as deputies tried to pull the truck over. The driver continued to drive erratically at times attempting to hit patrol vehicles. 

The truck continued to drive at speeds reaching 90 mph and erratically weaving in and out of traffic lanes into oncoming traffic as well as at times throwing trash out of the window onto the highway. 

Colorado State Patrol troopers shut down traffic at Highway 50 and 28 ½ Road.  Deputies were able to perform a Tactical Vehicle Intervention maneuver to stop the pickup just west of 28 ½ Road. The driver, identified as 19-year-old Sabastian Soto of Delta, got out of the truck and ran from law enforcement. He was found in a backyard at a residence on the 100 block of Glory View Drive. 

Soto is facing the following charges:
  • 14 counts of Failed to Drive in a Single Lane (Weaving) 
  • 14 counts of Failed to Use Turn Signals
  • 3 Counts of Second Degree Assault on a Police Officer (Class 4 Felony) 
  • 3 Counts Reckless Driving
  • 3 Counts Reckless Endangerment (Class 3 Misdemeanor)
  • 3 Counts Vehicular Assault while Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs (Class 4 Felony)
  • 2 Counts of Second Degree Criminal Trespass
  • DUI – Drove Vehicle while under the Influence 
  • Vehicular Eluding (Class 6 Felony) 
  • Unlawfully Carrying a Concealed Weapon-Unlawful Possession of Weapons (Class 2 Misdemeanor)
  • Speeding 25-39 MPH Over Limit
  • Aggravated Driving with Revoked License Habitual Offender Commits DUI (Class 6 Felony) 
  • Drove Vehicle when License under Restraint
  • Resisting Arrest (Class 2 Misdemeanor) 
  • Obstructing Peace Officer (Class 2 Misdemeanor)
  • Violation of a Protection Order (Class 2 Misdemeanor)
