Inmate Found Unresponsive

Update: The Mesa County Coroner's Office has identified the inmate found unresponsive in his jail cell in the Mesa County Detention Facility Friday as 39-year-old Carlos Lopez-Martinez. According to the Coroner's Office his cause of death was hanging and the manner of death was suicide.

MESA COUNTY, Colo – At approximately 11:40 this morning a male inmate in the Mesa County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in his cell by staff during routine security checks. Deputies and nursing staff immediately rendered aid and performed CPR. Emergency medical services (EMS) were also dispatched.

Multiple attempts at resuscitation by jail staff and EMS personnel were unsuccessful. He was later pronounced deceased.

At this time, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and Mesa County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The Coroner’s Office will also release the inmate’s identity after next of kin has been notified.
