The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has completed its examination regarding the death of Brianna Carpenter, a 28 year-old female resident of Grand Junction, Colorado. Mrs.Carpenter was the victim of the early morning shooting on December 24, 2019 in the 2900 Block of Sandra Avenue. The cause of death is gunshot wound of the abdomen and the manner of death is homicide.

No further information is expected to be released at this time, the case remains under investigation.

December 24, 2019, At approximately 7:20 am, Mesa County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a call of shots fired in the 2900 Block of Sandra Avenue.

 Deputies arrived and began CPR on the victim until EMT’s arrived. The 28 year old female victim was transported to St. Mary’s hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

Investigators arrested Aaron Carpenter, age 33, of Grand Junction, on the following charges:

Murder in the first degree
First degree assault

The coroner will release the victim’s identity and cause and manner of death at the conclusion of their investigation.

Deputies remain on scene continuing their investigation. This has been determined to be an isolated incident.

Inmate found unresponsive

#Update December 30, 2019: 

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has completed its examination regarding the death of Jeffrey Beagley, a 34 year-old male resident of Grand Junction, Colorado. Mr. Beagley was the male found unresponsive in his cell at the jail and later passed at a local hospital on December 23, 2019. He was found hanging in his cell, which he was the sole occupant. Jail footage was viewed and it was clear that no other persons entered the cell from the last time he was seen moving around and when he was found hanging. The cause of death is hanging and the manner is suicide.

This case is still under investigation by the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.

#Update December 24, 2019: The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has completed its examination regarding the death of Jeffrey Beagley, a 34 year-old male resident of Grand Junction, Colorado.

MESA COUNTY, Colo – At approximately 5:30 this morning a male inmate in the Mesa County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in his cell by staff during routine security checks. Deputies and nursing staff immediately rendered aid and performed CPR. Emergency medical services (EMS) were also dispatched.

The inmate was transported to St. Mary's hospital. He was pronounced deceased just before 2 pm.

At this time, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and Mesa County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The Coroner’s Office will also release the inmate’s identity after next of kin has been notified.

MESA COUNTY, Colo – The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is looking for two people who ran from deputies this afternoon.

Emilio Cordova, 21, and Lydia Campbell, 26, are considered armed and dangerous. If seen, do not approach and call 911 immediately

Cordova has two active warrants including a felony warrant out of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 2: 20 this afternoon deputies attempted a traffic stop on a white passenger car with two occupants in the area of Anna Court and William Drive. The car did not stop. Deputies attempted to stop the car using a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) maneuver. It was not successful and the car continued on at a high rate of speed.

Deputies performed a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) to bring the vehicle to a stop in the area of 32 ½ Road and D Road. A male and female got out of the car and ran into the area of the Candlewood Trailer Park.

Residences in the area were sent a Community Notification to shelter in place. Even though most students had already left of the day, Chatfield and Rocky Mountain Elementary School was placed into a Shelter in Place as a precaution for staff still on campus. The shelter in place has since been lifted.

Colorado State Patrol, Grand Junction Police Department, GJPD’s K9 unit, US Marshals, FBI, ATF, Parole and Colorado Parks and Wildlife also assisted.

Charges from today’s incident are still under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Inmate Found Unresponsive

1/2/2020 Update: The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has completed its examination regarding the death of Brittany Matthews, a 36-year-old female resident of Grand Junction, Colorado. Ms. Matthews was the inmate found unresponsive the morning of December 19, 2019. Her cause of death is complications of chronic alcoholism and the manner is natural.

12/20/19 Update: The Mesa County Coroner's Office has identified the inmate found unresponsive in the Mesa County Detention Facility Thursday as 36-year-old Brittany Matthews of Grand Junction. According to the Coroner's Office toxicology is pending at this time, but there were no injuries found during the autopsy and it does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

MESA COUNTY, Colo – Just before 7:00 this morning a female inmate in the Mesa County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in her cell in booking by staff when attempting to serve the morning meal. Deputies and nursing staff immediately rendered aid and performed CPR. Emergency medical services (EMS) were also dispatched.

Multiple attempts at resuscitation by jail staff and EMS personnel were unsuccessful. She was later pronounced deceased.

At this time, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and Mesa County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The Coroner’s Office will also release the inmate’s identity after next of kin has been notified.

One arrested after standoff in Redlands

MESA COUNTY, Colo – Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Gene Gana, 51, of Grand Junction this afternoon following an hours-long standoff at a home on the 2100 block of Broadway.

Gana had two active warrants for his arrest, a Felony warrant out of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and a Parole violation from the Department of Corrections. When deputies attempted to contact Gana at the residence, he barricaded himself inside and refused to come out. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and Grand Junction Police Department combined SWAT team was called in to assist.

Out of an abundance of caution Broadway Elementary School and Redlands Middle School was put into a shelter in place. A community notification asking residents to shelter in place was also sent to homes within a ¼ mile of the area. The shelter in place has since been lifted.

After about 2 and a half hours, Gana came out of the home and was taken into custody without further incident. Gana was booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility.

Two arrested on multiple child abuse charges

MESA COUNTY, Colo - Tuesday, Forrest Nash and Cory Nash, both of Grand Junction, were taken into custody after a warrant was obtained for their arrest.

Just after midnight on November 30, 2019, deputies began investingating a report of child abuse after a young child was brought to St. Mary’s Hospital in critical condition. The child was suspected to have ingested an amount of marijuana that led to life threatening complications and was flown to Salt Lake City Children’s Hospital for emergency care. The child is now recovering.

Upon further investigation additional incidents of child abuse involving 5 other children ranging in age from 8-13 were alleged to have occurred between January 2019 and November 2019.

Forrest Nash, 32, is facing the following charges:

• Child Abuse Knowing or Reckless with Serious Bodily Injury (F3)
• 5 Counts of Child Abuse Knowing or Reckless with Injury (M1)
• 5 Counts of Child Abuse Knowing or Reckless with No Injury (M2)
• 2 Counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (F4)
• 2 Counts of Dispensing Marijuana to a Minor (DF4)

Cory Nash, 28, is facing the following charges:

• Child Abuse Knowing or Reckless with Serious Bodily Injury (F3)

Arrest made in recent auto theft and car break-ins in Orchard Mesa

MESA COUNTY, Colo - Rodion Hightower, 24, of Grand Junction was taken into custody Tuesday after a warrant was obtained for his arrest.

Hightower is facing the following charges:

• First Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (F4)
• Fraud – Identity Theft – Uses Info to Obtain (F4)
• 6 Counts of First Degree Criminal Trespass of Auto (F5)
• Criminal Impersonation (F6)
• Criminal Possession of a Financial Device (F6)
• Theft $750-$2,000 (M1)
• Theft $350-$750 (M2)
• Unauthorized Use of a Financial Transaction Device

Surveillance footage 

The charges stem from several theft from autos and an auto theft that occurred between 11/30/2019 and 12/05/2019 in the Orchard Mesa area between 28 and 28 ½ Roads. Surveillance footage from Rimrock Walmart showed a white male wearing an Alice in Wonderland  hooded sweatshirt attempting to make a purchase with a credit card stolen from one of the vehicles. Photos were released to the public via social media in an attempt to identify the subject. Numerous tips were sent in and investigators confirmed the subject’s identity to be Rodion Hightower.

MCSO investigating a suspicious incident

Monday 12-9-19 Update:  Deputies have identified and contacted this person. At this point in the investigation, deputies are still working to determine if he is the source of the sharp object the student found in their backpack. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office believes this is an isolated incident. No other incidents have been reported.

We want to encourage parents to talk to their students when they are walking to and from school to pay attention to their surroundings. If they see something that is not right, run away and tell a trusted adult or call 911. Remember students can also make reports through Safe2Tell.

This incident remains under investigation.

MESA COUNTY, Colo – On Wednesday afternoon a Mesa County Sheriff’s deputy assigned as a School Resource Office began investigating a report of a possible assault of a student on the way to school at Nisley Elementary School.

A student told deputies when they were walking to school that morning with their sibling on 28 ¾ Road on the sidewalk, a man bumped into their sibling and then struck the student on the backpack. The man then continued to walk away from them. No one was hurt.

Later in the day, the student discovered a rip in their backpack and found an extendable razor blade inside. Another student told a school counselor what happened and they called the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

As part of the investigation into the incident, a School Resource Officer was in the area the next day looking for the person in question and talking to potential witnesses. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is working in partnership with School District 51 Security to determine how the sharp object got into the student’s backpack. Deputies are also working with local businesses to locate surveillance video of the person.

The student described person is described as a white male, medium build and approximately 5’8” in height, with short dark hair. They were seen wearing a large puffy black jacket.

At this point in the investigation, deputies have located a man matching that description on surveillance video walking in the immediate area. Deputies have tracked down additional surveillance video from an area businesses of the person’s face and are asking for the public’s help to identify him.

Deputies would like to speak with this person as the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is still working to determine if this person is the source of the sharp object the student found in their backpack and if a crime has occurred.

Grand Junction man arrested on active warrant

MESA COUNTY, Colo - This afternoon Jarrod Bidlack, 22, of Grand Junction, was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

During an unrelated traffic stop this morning, deputies learned Bidlack, who had an active warrant, was at a residence on the 500 block of Garfield Ave.

As a precaution, Bookcliff Middle School was put on shelter in place. It has since been lifted.

When deputies knocked on the door of the residence, a person and a dog came outside. While that person was being detained, the dog became aggressive and charged at deputies. Deputies, not wanting to injure the dog, or let the dog injure anyone else, deployed a tazer. The dog stopped its aggressive behavior and ran off.

Deputies continued to ask Bidlack to come out of the house. Ultimately he complied, and was arrested without further incident.

Bidlack was booked in to the Mesa County Detention Facility.

Animal Services was called to help locate the dog. The dog returned home on its own and was taken to the vet. Deputies later went to the vet to check on the dog. The dog is treated for minor abrasions on his paws from running and is now back at home with his owners.

CA man faces drug distribution charges after stop on I-70

MESA COUNTY, Colo - On Sunday, December 1, 2019 at approximately 7 pm a Mesa County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to the Western Colorado Drug Taskforce stopped a truck traveling on I-70 at the Mack exit. The deputy observed the vehicle had failed to use a signal while changing lanes and the rear license plate light was inoperative. During the traffic stop, the deputy noticed an external fuel tank in the back of the truck that didn’t have any fuel residue that is usually present with that type of fuel tank. Once permission was obtained, the deputy searched the truck.

Several plastic wrapped packages containing a crystalline substance consistent with methamphetamine were found inside the external fuel tank. The total gross weight was 67.2 pounds. One package contained 1.8 pounds of pills consistent with fentanyl.

The driver, identified as 42-year-old Donald Martinez-Guevara of California, was arrested and is facing the following charges:

• Distribution/ Manufacture/Possession with Intent to Distribute > than 225g of Schedule I/II or > 112g of meth, heroin, ketamine, cathinone or > 50mg of Flunitrazipam (DF1)
• Special Circumstances Import > 14g of Schedule I/II or 7g of meth, heroin, ketamine, cathinone or > 10mg of Flunitrazipam (DF1)
• Failed to use turn signals

Martinez-Guevara is currently being held in the Mesa County Detention Facility on a $100,000 bond.

Suspicious incident near Central High School

UPDATE: One juvenile was transported to the Department of Youth Services on an unrelated warrant. Charges related to today's incident are pending further investigation.

MESA COUNTY, Colo - At approximately 12:40 this afternoon deputies responded to a report of someone seeing two juveniles in a truck unloading what appeared to be a gun at Long Family Memorial Park. The witness reported the truck then drove into Central High School’s adjacent parking lot.

School Resource Officers on campus at Central High School immediately responded as did nearby deputies, Grand Junction Police officers, Colorado State Patrol troopers and District 51 Security. Central High School was also immediately put into shelter in place. It has since been lifted.

The truck was quickly located nearby on Hoover Ct. Deputies conducted a traffic stop and two juveniles were detained. It was determined the weapon seen was in fact a replica weapon.

This situation is still under investigation.

It’s important to point out the person who called 911 to report seeing a weapon did the right thing. We strongly encourage anyone who sees something suspicious or out of place to call 911. Thankfully no one was hurt in this situation and all students are safe.

MESA COUNTY, Colo: Just after 7 am this morning, December 1, 2019, Deputies were dispatched to a shots fired call in De Beque. Colorado State Patrol officers were also sent to assist.
Upon arrival Deputies contacted the reporting party who advised that someone had fired shots into his home from a car. Kevin Newby (DOB 5/31/77) was arrested in connection to the call. No injuries have been reported at this time and the investigation is in effect to determine which charges will be filed.

MESA COUNTY, Colo - Two people were arrested Tuesday evening in an ongoing investigating into the sale and distribution of methamphetamine in Mesa County.

Deputies with Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes and Crime Reduction Unit, worked in partnership with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), US Marshals Service, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Deputies observed multiple short-term traffic consistent with the distribution of controlled substances at a residence on the 400 block of Fox Run Street.

Kathryn Kohlenberg, 40, of Grand Junction was arrested for an active unrelated warrant. Kohlenberg was found in possession of a crystalline substance consistent with methamphetamine.

Richard Gallegos, 42, of Grand Junction was arrested and was found in possession of a black tar substance consistent with heroin and a crystalline substance consistent with methamphetamine.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence on Fox Run Street. During the search, 2.5 pounds of a crystalline substance consistent with methamphetamine was found and 3 firearms were recovered, two of which were defaced.

Kohlenberg is facing the following charges:

• Distribution/ Manufacture/Possession with Intent to Distribute > than 225g of Schedule I/II or > 112g of meth, heroin, ketamine, cathinone or > 50mg of Flunitrazipam, (DF1)
• 2 counts of Possession of Schedule I/II (DF4)

• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (DPO)

Gallegos is facing the following charges:

• Distribution/ Manufacture/Possession with Intent to Distribute > than 225g of Schedule I/II or > 112g of meth, heroin, ketamine, cathinone or > 50mg of Flunitrazipam, (DF1)
• Special Circumstances defendant or confederate possessed a firearm (DF1)

Male Arrested after Early Morning Pursuit

MESA COUNTY, Colorado- November 16, 2019- Deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office are working with Colorado State Patrol Troopers after a welfare check turned into a traffic pursuit ending in an accident early this morning.
  Deputies were dispatched to a vehicle parked in the middle of D 1/2 Road just west of 32 road. The vehicle was reportedly running and there was an individual sitting in the driver's seat. They attempted to contact the driver, identified as 25 year old Theodore Coca, who awoke and fled from officers in the vehicle. A short pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into a Clifton residence and Coca attempted to flee on foot. Deputies deployed department issued Tasers which assisted in safely detaining him.
  Coca was checked for injuries by medical providers and taken to the Mesa County Jail  to be booked on an open warrant and charges related to this incident.

One person detained after standoff

MESA COUNTY, Colo – Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Andrew Arms, 19, of Grand Junction this afternoon following an hours-long standoff at a home on the 900 block of 24 Road.

This morning deputies investigated multiple reports of car break-ins and home burglaries in the area of 24 Road and I ½ Road. Several items including two guns were reported stolen. Through the course of the investigation deputies identified a person of interest at a nearby residence.

When deputies attempted to contact the subject, he barricaded himself inside the residence and refused to come out. Given guns were stolen, the subject was believed to be armed. Out of an abundance of caution, the joint Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and Grand Junction Police Department SWAT Team was called in to assist.

After several hours, Arms gave up and was arrested without further incident. Charges related to this incident and the recent thefts are still under review pending further investigation.

A community notification to shelter in place was sent to 61 residences in the area. It has since been lifted. Appleton Elementary School delayed a bus for about ten minutes to keep students away from the area. Middle and High School buses were not affected.

The case is still under investigation.

Bookcliffs Death Investigation

MESA COUNTY, Colo – Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a man found on the Bookcliffs east of Mt. Garfield Wednesday.

People searching for a missing Palisade man located a car that appears to have gone over the cliff in the Coal Canyon area. Due to the remote location, Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputies, Mesa County Search and Rescue volunteers and Centurylink’s helicopter helped recover the body found.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased as Harry Oxford, 47, of Palisade. Oxford was reported missing to the Palisade Police Department on November 8. He was last heard from on the morning of October 31.

The case is still under investigation, however nothing suspicious is suspected at this time.

MESA COUNTY, Colo – Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies make two arrests linked to a home burglary and several car break-ins at local trailheads where car windows were broken out and items stolen. Deputies and investigators tracked stolen credit card purchases, used surveillance video, and pawn records to identify the suspects.

Jared Balderston, 29, and Misty Winston, 38, were arrested after a warrant for their arrest was obtained.

Both are facing the following charges:

• 2 counts of 1st Degree Criminal Trespass of Auto (F5)

MESA COUNTY, Colo - The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help to locate 60-year-old Russell “Rusty” Reader of Grand Junction. He was last seen on Saturday at about 12:30 pm in the area of 30 Road and D Road. He was seen on surveillance video going to Kokopelli Liquor (2996 D Rd). Investigators have determined Rusty made it home nearby, but left sometime between 12:30 pm and 7:30pm. He left behind his phone, coat and changed his hat.

Rusty is believed to be wearing blue jeans, a tie dye shirt (seen in the surveillance video photo) and a blue Bronco’s hat. Rusty is a white male, 6’3”, weighs 156 pounds and has green eye and gray hair.

Rusty is dependent on medications and could possibly be suffering from dementia. Investigators believe he may have wondered off on foot. Rusty is known to frequent fishing spots along the river and at Corn Lake.

Grand Junction man arrested for multiple sex crimes on a child

MESA COUNTY, Colo – Gregory Trout, 60 of Grand Junction turned himself into the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday after investigators obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Trout is facing the following charges:

• 7 counts of Sexual Assault on a Child, Pattern of Abuse (F3)
• One count of Indecent Exposure (M1)

The charges are stemming from alleged incidents with three separate child victims that allegedly occurred between 1988 -2019. Additional victims were identified and interviewed by investigators, however the alleged crimes were beyond the statute of limitations.

Vicious Dog Shot

MESA COUNTY, Colo- Saturday, November 2, 2019, Mesa County Sheriff's Deputies are working with Mesa County Animal Control and the owners of a dog that was shot this afternoon.
 MCSO deputies were dispatched to the 3100 block of West Merganser Lane to a report of a vicious dog that was keeping a citizen from leaving their house. While waiting for Animal Control to arrive, Deputies attempted to locate the owner of the dog. The dog acted aggressively toward deputies when approached so they stayed back until the animal attacked a nearby child.  In order to protect the child and other neighbors, deputies shot the dog. The owners were located shortly thereafter and have opted to have the dog put down noting that the safety of their neighbors is most important.

On Saturday, October 26, just after midnight Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a two cars with windows broken out on the 500 block of Garfield Dr. The total estimated cost of the damage is $1400.

About ten minutes later. deputies responded to a burglary in process at the Alta gas station at 2999 North Ave, about a 12 minute walk from Garfield Dr. During this incident three businesses, the Alta Gas Station (2998 North Ave), the Domino's (510 30 Rd) and the La Milpa Tortilla Factory (514 30 Rd), all had glass windows and doors broken. Items were also stolen from the Alta gas station. A vehicle north of the Alta Gas Station was found with multiple windows shattered. Two fires were started in the same area and time of this incident and are believed to be related.

Later the same day (October 26), at about 4:30 pm a person called in to report their car had been damaged on Texas Ave near 30 Road sometime during the night.

On Tuesday, October 29, the Alta gas station was burglarized a second time at about 12:30 am. A window pane was broken and items stolen were from the store. The cost of the damage was estimated to be about $2700.

Through the course of the investigation, Randall was identified as the suspect in these four recent cases. Total cost of the damage from these cases is estimated to be about $53,100.

A sword believed to be an object used to break windows during these incidents was recovered at Randall’s residence as were items believed to been stolen during the burglaries.

Randall is facing the following charges:

• 2 counts of 2nd Degree Burglary (Class 4 Felony)
• Criminal Mischief $20,000 or more, less than $100,000 (Class 4 Felony)
• Criminal Mischief $5,000 or more, less than $20,000 (Class 5 Felony)
• 5 counts of Criminal Mischief $1000 or more, less than $5,000 (Class 6 Felony) 
• Obstructing Peace Officer (Class 2 Misdemeanor)
• 2 counts of 2nd Degree Arson, less than $100 (Class 2 Misdemeanor)
• Theft $50-$300 (Class 3 Misdemeanor)
• Theft Less than $50 Shoplifting (PO1)

Have an adult come with you to trick-or-treat, and go in a group.

Avoid wearing costumes to school that are gory, scary, violent, or include full-face makeup or a full-face mask.

Light colored costumes and reflective clothing or tape help drivers see trick-or-treaters.

Light the way by carrying flashlights or glow sticks.

Outfits should allow freedom of movement and be fire retardant or fire resistant.

Watch for cars, use crosswalks, and plan a safe route and stick to it.

Eyes should be able to see up, down, forward, and from the sides if you’re wearing a mask.

Eat treats only after your parents have inspected them for signs of tampering.

Never go inside a stranger’s home or vehicle while trick-or-treating, and don’t eat homemade treats unless you know the person who made them.

MCSO investigates weekend burglary and vandalism

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo - On October 26, 2019 at approximately 12:14 am, Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputies and Grand Junction Police Officers responded to the area of 30 Rd and I 70 Business Loop for a Burglary in progress.

Witnesses reported a male in a dark colored hooded sweatshirt was breaking windows at multiple businesses.

The Alta Gas Station (2998 North Ave), The Domino's (510 30 Rd) and the La Milpa Tortilla Factory (514 30 Rd) were all damaged. There was also a vehicle north of the Alta Gas Station with multiple windows shattered. Two fires were started in the same area of this incident and are believed to be related. One in the alleyway North of the Gas station, flames were put out by a deputy using a fire extinguisher and the homeowner using a garden hose. A second fire was started in the field just Northeast of North Ave Storage  (516 30 Rd). Deputies worked to contain the fire, until the fire department arrived.

Deputies observed what appeared to be the suspect running north bound in the alley behind the North Ave Storage. With the assistance of the Grand Junction Police Department as well as the Colorado State Patrol, deputies searched for the suspect. Ultimately, a suspect was not located.

Deputies are currently reviewing surveillance footage and processing evidence. This case is still under investigation.

MCSO Volunteers honored and recognized for work in the community

MESA COUNTY, Colo - The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office partners with several volunteer groups that are vital to providing services to Mesa County. Over 300 dedicated volunteers give their time selflessly to help our agency and our community.

Recently, they were recognized and thanked for their efforts during a volunteer appreciation lunch. This year, five individuals were awarded Volunteer of the Year for their contributions to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, respective volunteer organization and the community.

Ovella Fick Victim Advocate Program

 Volunteer of the Year

Ovella Fick, a volunteer for the Victim Advocate Program since 2015, was recognized for her dedication and compassion with helping victims of crime and trauma. So far this year, Victim Advocates responded to over 200 callouts, serving over 400 individual victims. Advocates respond 24/7 to assist victims and families of not only crimes, but also assist victims and families on search and rescue missions as well as fires.

Support Services Volunteer of the Year

Ken Dorman has been a volunteer of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years. Ken was recognized as Support Services Volunteer of the Year for his outstanding dedication and professionalism. He is a mentor, a leader, and an excellent example for his fellow volunteers in the Civil Unit. Over 700 hours donated yearly by volunteers like Ken accounts for at least 15% of civil processes served from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office!

Volunteer of the Year for Mesa County Search and Rescue was awarded to a couple involved in several teams and subcommittees with the volunteer organization. Mike Verbit and Sarah Eller are both volunteers for Mesa County Search and Rescue’s Ground Team. Sarah is also the team leader for the Swift Water Rescue Team and Mike is also a member of the Technical Rescue Team. The pair have repeatedly donated their personal time to enhance the capabilities of the search and rescue in Mesa County. So far this, Mesa County Search and Rescue volunteers were called out 82 times for missions which included rescuing lost or injured hikers and hunters, evidence recovery, and river rescues.

Detentions Volunteer of the Year Award

Danny Daniels, a religious volunteer for the Mesa County Detention Facility since 2008, was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award. Daniels ministers and visits with the inmates; always with a smile on his face and kind words for each person he encounters. Affectionately known as, the “Book Guy.” Danny visits each housing unit in the facility monthly and exchanges the books available to the inmates for leisure reading. For many inmates these books fill their hours with something on which to focus and they look forward to Danny’s arrival and delivery of new reading material.

The volunteers that work in the Detentions Facility include representatives from Mind Springs, the Jail Ministry, numerous other religious volunteers, and various other educational groups. So far this year volunteers for all of these groups totaled 1,142 hours.

Citizens on Patrol program

Jan Moss, a volunteer since 2005, was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for the Citizens on Patrol (COP) program. Jan is a Field Training Officer for the COP Program and assists with the administrative work associated with unattended deaths, as well as, abandoned and red-tagged vehicles. Jan’s primary task is providing support with towed vehicles. She contacts more than 25 tow companies each week to check for towed vehicles and determines if the last known registered owner needs to be contacted.

In 2019, Citizen on Patrol volunteers volunteered over 3350 hours. Volunteer tasks include performing school checks, VIN Inspections, Red Tags of vehicles, serve Civil Papers, vacation home checks, providing scene security and assisting in special events. Their work helps allow patrol deputies to focus and respond to more 911 calls.

And finally, long-time volunteer Gene Admire was thanked for his dedication to our community. Gene recently retired from the Citizens On Patrol (COP) program with 26 years of service. He was one of the original volunteers when the program first began. Gene was known on the radio as “Victor 1” and carried his radio number with distinction. In Gene’s honor the radio number “Victor 1” is now retired.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is incredibly fortunate to have such hard working and dedicated volunteers. The hundreds of hours donated in service to our community truly make a difference. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office could not possibly provide the high level of service to our community we do without the amazing work our volunteers perform each and every day.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Investigators are asking for the public’s help with regards to yesterday’s incident. Anyone in the area of 2200 block of I Road between the hours 8 am -1 pm yesterday (Wednesday, October 23, 2019) are asked to please contact the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators wish to speak to potential witnesses of yesterday’s incident. People they wish to speak with include drivers who pass the area as part of their daily commute.

MESA COUNTY, Colo - At 12:19 this afternoon Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a shooting on the 2200 block of I Road.

When deputies arrived an adult female was found deceased. Deputies immediately began searching the area as well as going door to door to speak with any potential witnesses. During this same time an Emergency Notification to shelter in place was sent out to 39 residents in the area. It has since been lifted. I Road remains closed between 22 Road to 22 1/2 Road and I 1/4 Road.

At this time no suspect is in custody. This is still an active and ongoing investigation.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine cause and manner of death, as well as release the identity of the deceased once next of kin is notified.

Fruita man facing murder charge

MESA COUNTY, Colo – Friday night, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office investigators obtained a warrant for the arrest of Matthew Logan, 33, of Fruita related to the disappearance of Frank Taylor.

Logan was arrested earlier in the evening for two unrelated warrants. He now faces charges of Murder in the First Degree (Class 1 Felony) and Tampering with a Deceased Human Body (Class 3 Felony).

53-year-old Franklin “Frank” Taylor, was reported missing in March by friends under suspicious circumstances.

This case remains an active investigation. All documents related to this case have been sealed by the court.

Logan is currently being held in the Mesa County Detention Facility on a No Bond Hold.

One arrested after late night shooting in the desert

MESA COUNTY, Colo – At approximately 12:30 Saturday morning members of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Junction Police Department and Colorado State Patrol responded to a report of a shooting at a party in the desert near 27 ¼ Road in an area commonly known as “the dam.”

Law enforcement began contacting everyone leaving the area. Several witnesses and multiple victims were quickly identified. It was determined no one was injured and there weren’t any outstanding injured victims remaining in the desert.

One victim told deputies a male was shooting at them as they were escaping from the area in a truck. No one inside the truck was injured. The truck did sustained damage from a bullet hole through the driver’s side mirror.

In all, approximately 25-30 vehicles were contacted, and about 60-80 individuals were identified and spoken to. Firearms were recovered at the scene and collected for evidence.

Angel Rodriguez-Archuleta, 20, of Grand Junction was arrested and is facing charges related to this incident including Attempted Second Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Assault, Felony Menacing and Illegal Discharge of a Weapon.

MCSO investigates escape attempt from Mesa County Detention Facility

MESA COUNTY, Colo – At approximately 9 Saturday morning, an inmate in the Mesa County Detention Facility attempted to escape.

The inmate, identified as Malcolm Martin, 25, of Grand Junction, climbed up into a crawl space above the ceiling tiles and proceeded to move to another part of the jail. Martin was heard in the ceiling by detention deputies and booking staff. Detention deputies helped Martin down. He was secured and is now being housed in another part of the facility.

Martin never left the secured facility. The Mesa County Detention Facility remains secure.

The damage to the ceiling is being assessed and repairs are being scheduled.

Martin is facing new charges as a result of the incident.

This remains an active investigation.

Two arrested after late night armed robbery

MESA COUNTY, Colo – At approximately 11:15 Thursday night, Mesa County Sheriff deputies responded to a report of an armed robbery at a gas station at 3218 F Road.

The reporting party told deputies two people entered the store, one wearing a black sweatshirt and black pants, the other a red sweatshirt and a red bandana over their face. One of the suspects pointed a gun at the victim, and then both of them took the cash register drawer and ran away from the area on foot.

Through the course of the investigation, one of the suspects was quickly identified. Deputies and Colorado State Patrol troopers quickly surrounded and secured the suspect’s known address on the 600 block of Leah Ct. An emergency notification to shelter in place was sent to 518 phone numbers registered in the area.

All of the occupants came outside of the house. Two suspects were arrested, they are identified as juveniles.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence. Investigators recovered a replica weapon, and other evidence related to the robbery.

The two juveniles were transported to the Department of Youth Services. Charges stemming from this incident are pending. The District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case to determine the appropriate charges.

This case is still under investigation.

Clifton man arrested after motor vehicle theft

MESA COUNTY, Colo – Thursday at 9:40 p.m., Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a male walking down the street with a gun in the area of the 500 block of 32 1/2 Rd. 

As deputies arrived in the area, a 911 call came in reporting the male stole a car at gunpoint. Deputies observed the stolen car in the area of 32 1/2 Rd and Lucile Ave and pursued it. The vehicle traveled north bound on 32 1/2 road at a high rate of speed with no headlamps on. The car hit a mailbox and parked trailer before eventually coming to a stop near 32 ½ Road and E ½ Road.

Nicolas Millican. 20, of Clifton was arrested at gunpoint. He is facing the following charges:

• 2 Counts of Aggravated Robbery (Class 3 Felony)
• 2 Counts of Menacing (Class 5 Felony)
• Vehicular Eluding (Class 3 Felony)
• 1st Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (Class 4 Felony)
• Drove Vehicle Without a Driver's License
• 2 Counts of Failed to Remain At the Scene of a Crash (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
• Speeding 40 MPH or More Over
• Drove Without Headlamps On
• Reckless Driving
• Violation of a Protection Order (Class 1 Misdemeanor)

The victims were known to the suspect.

CLIFTON, Colo - At approximately 9:05 p.m. Thursday Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence on the 3400 block of F 3/4 Road.

A 39-year-old male was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. 

One person is in custody. There are no outstanding suspects. 

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine cause and manner of death, as well as release the identity of the deceased once next of kin is notified.

All documents have been sealed. This is an active and ongoing investigation.

Juvenile charged after armed robbery

MESA COUNTY, Colo - At approximately 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 22, Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of stolen SUV at Long Family Memorial Park.

The victim told deputies four individuals, stole his SUV at gun point. The owner of the SUV was assaulted during the encounter and sustained minor injuries. Two other occupants of the SUV were not injured. The suspects drove the SUV through landscaping at the park, then continued on the street.

A short time later, deputies spotted the stolen gray 2000 GMC Yukon driving recklessly at a high rate of speed on North Ave near 29 Road. The SUV crashed into a car at the intersection of F Road and I-70 B. Two passengers in the car were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The SUV came to a stop in bushes on the 3200 block of F Road. The sole occupant of the vehicle got out and ran. Deputies located and arrested the suspect, identified as a juvenile.

Deputies did recover weapons that fell out of the SUV during the pursuit. Three suspects are still outstanding.

The juvenile was taken to the hospital via ambulance to be medically cleared, then was transported to the Department of Youth Services.

The juvenile has been charged with a crime of violence which permits further public disclosure pursuant to CRS 19-1-304(5) and CRS 24-72-302(1). As such, the juvenile is identified as Andre Carothers, 16, of Grand Junction.

Carothers is currently being held without bond.

The case is still under investigation.

Early morning home invasion robbery

FRUITVALE, Colo – Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a home invasion robbery on the 500 Block of Eastbrook Street about 3:40 this morning.

The homeowner, who is in his 80s, ran to a neighbor’s house who called 911 for help. It was reported to deputies a man entered his home and assaulted him.

The homeowner’s silver 2017 Ford Mustang was stolen. It was recovered a short distance away on Bookcliff Ave and Ashbury Ct. abandoned.

A Community Notification went out to homes in a one-mile radius asking people to shelter-in-place. It has since been lifted.

The homeowner was taken to St. Mary’s hospital and treated for a minor injury.

The suspect is described as an adult male wearing all dark clothing, a mask, possibly white shoes, and is about 5’8”.

Three juveniles arrested in connection with theft from autos

MESA COUNTY, Colo – As part of an effort to prevent crimes such as theft from vehicles, Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies deployed bait operation equipment on Friday in the area of 32 ½ Road and D 7/8 Road.

On Saturday, at approximately 3:20 am deputies were alerted an item was stolen from a vehicle used in the bait operation. Deputies tracked the item to three juveniles, ages 11-14, on the 500 block of 32 ½ Road. One juvenile was observed by a deputy entering a vehicle not belonging to them, another was in possession of the item stolen from the bait operation.

Two juveniles were arrested and transported to the Department of Youth Services on the following charges:

• 2 counts of First Degree Criminal Trespass of Auto (Class 5 Felony)
• Theft $50-$300 from Motor Vehicle (Class 3 Misdemeanor)
• Violation of Bail Bond Conditions (Class 3 Misdemeanor)

A third juvenile was issued a Promise to Appear for 2 counts of First Degree Criminal Trespass of Auto (Class 5 Felony) and Theft $50-$300 from Motor Vehicle (Class 3 Misdemeanor).

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office utilizes bait operations as a proactive investigative tool to reduce property crime. Operations are conducted in areas where on-going criminal activity has been reported to specially target auto thieves and persons breaking and entering into cars with the intent to steal property. Bait operations give deputies a proactive way to identify suspects without a citizen becoming a victim of a crime.

MCSO Warns of Increasing Fire Danger

MESA COUNTY, Colo - The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office wants to alert the public to increasing fire danger in Mesa County.

While there are currently no fire restrictions in place, the potential for wildfire is still a concern. Our seasonably hot and dry weather and recent lack of measurable rain are causing local vegetation to dry out. In these conditions, a small spark has the potential to turn into a dangerous wildfire quickly.

To reduce the risk of wildfire, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to recreate responsibility this Labor Day holiday weekend and into hunting season. Please be extra cautious with campfires, smoking outdoors and avoid dragging chains on trailers near dry brush.

Remember, if you light a campfire it is your responsibility to make sure it is completely out before you leave. A campfire is considered completely out when the embers are cool to the touch. Even a small amount of heat can reignite and start a wildfire.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating with federal and local partners weekly to monitor current fire conditions. When considering putting fire restrictions into place, fuel moisture levels, weather forecasts, and human factors such as holidays and anticipated fire related recreation activities are all analyzed.

Right now, no fire restrictions are in place in Mesa County, but people should still be aware of the fire risk.

Craig man arrested following a foot pursuit

MESA COUNTY, Colo - At 11:32 am Tuesday, a Mesa County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of a male possibly breaking into a car in a parking lot at 441 29 Road.

While the deputy was talking with the male, he took off running, and the deputy pursued on foot.

The male refused to stop and jumped over a fence. A taser was deployed. It was ineffective and the male kept running, onto the railroad tracks. He was located by other responding deputies and arrested near I-70B and the railroad tracks under the 29 Road Bridge.

The man was identified as Brandon Ray, 26, of Craig. Ray is facing the following charges.

MESA COUNTY, Colo.- Tuesday, August 20, at approximately 4 pm, Richard Bingham, 38, of Grand Junction was booked into the Mesa County jail on charges of Felony Sex Assault on a Child.

A joint investigation between the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and Grand Junction Police Department beginning in June 2019 concluded this week with the arrest. The alleged acts occurred between 2013 and 2017 and Bingham was known to the families of the juveniles victims.

In court Wednesday afternoon, Bingham was advised of the following charges:

• Second Degree Kidnapping, a class 2 felony, in violation of CRS 18-3-302(3)(a)
• 2 Counts of Sexual Assault on a Child (Pattern), a class 3 felony, in violation of CRS 18-3-405(2)(d) 
• 2 Counts of Sexual Assault on a Child, a class 4 felony, in violation of CRS 18-3-405(2) 
• Crime of Violence, a sentence enhancer, as defined by CRS 18-1.3-406(2)(b)
• Jessica's Law, a sentence enhancer, as defined by CRS 18-1.3-1004(1)(e)

Bingham remains in the Mesa County Detention Facility with a $100,000 cash only bond. 

Update: District Attorney Clears Grand Junction Police Department Officers Involved in June OIS

MESA COUNTY, Colo - At approximately 1:00 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019, officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to a report of a suicidal male with a gun outside a residence in the 2400 block of Jack Creek Road. When officers arrived, the 29-year-old male was found walking eastbound on Jack Creek Road with a handgun. A confrontation occurred between the male and officers on scene and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The male was transported to St. Mary’s hospital via ambulance to be treated for his injuries. Once he was medically cleared and released, he was arrested for charges including two counts of Criminal Attempt of Second Degree Murder, a class 3 felony.

As with all officer-involved shootings in Mesa County, the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, comprised of representatives of the Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Fruita Police Department, Palisade Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Colorado State Parole, and Colorado Bureau of Investigation, was responsible for the investigation of this incident.

The CIRT investigation was completed and turned over to the Mesa County District Attorney’s Office. The officers involved in this incident have returned to work. District Attorney Dan Rubinstein has completed his review of the investigation, and his findings can be reviewed here.

MESA COUNTY, Colo – The 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team made an arrest related to the incident that occurred on June 14, 2019.

Spencer Shanley, 29, of Grand Junction was released from the hospital over the weekend and was taken into custody.

Shanley was arrested on the following charges:

• 2 Counts of Criminal Attempt of Second Degree Murder (Class 3 Felony)
• 2 Counts of First Degree Assault (Class 3 Felony)
• 2 Counts of Felony Menacing (Class 5 Felony)
• 1 Count of Prohibited Use of a Weapon (Class 2 Misdemeanor)

Shanley is currently being held in the Mesa County Detention Facility on a No Bond Hold until First Appearance. For updated bond amounts visit our website.

Law enforcement continues to process the scene of this incident for additional evidence. Residents in the area may see an increased presence of law enforcement personnel over the next several hours.

Members of the Critical Incident Response Team will conduct interviews of all witnesses and involved persons in this case over the coming days. Additional details will be released as appropriate, with sensitivity to the ongoing investigation.

The Grand Junction Police Department will be responsible for releasing the names of the involved officers. As per their agency’s policy, the officers will be placed on administrative leave.

Clifton Woman Arrested After Overnight Stabbing

MESA COUNTY, Colo. - On Friday night, July 19, 2019, at approximately 9:17 pm, Mesa County Deputies responded to 424 32 Rd #272 for a reported stabbing. The investigation revealed a 24-year-old Clifton man, had been stabbed in the torso by Samantha Reed, age 24 of Clifton.

Samantha Reed was taken into custody by Mesa County Sheriff's Office Investigatigator on July 20, 2019, for 2nd Degree Assault with a Deadly Weapon and is being held without bond at the Mesa County Detention Facility. 

The case remains under investigation.
