UPDATE: Inmate Who Jumped to his Death Identified

Mesa County, Colo -- UPDATE: 04/08/2016 - The inmate who died last night after jumping from the second floor balcony of the jail has been identified.  Carl McDaniel, age 50, was declared dead at the scene.

McDaniel has been in the Mesa County Detention Facility since May of 2014.  He was recently convicted of sexual assault on a child and was pending sentencing.   The cause and manner of death will be released by the Mesa County Coroner's Office when they complete their investigation.  





On 04/07/2016 at 4:21 pm, a male inmate, who had been booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on an outstanding warrant relating to sexual assault charges, jumped from the second floor balcony to the first floor, striking his head.  Medical attention was immediately provided by deputies and medical staff while the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to the Detention Facility.  The inmate was declared deceased at the scene.

The identity of the inmate is not being released at this time pending notification of family.

The investigation is being handled by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Complex Crimes Unit and the Mesa County Coroner's Office, but no foul play is suspected
